SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS
THE CASE FOUNDATION

The Case Foundation (Foundation) seeks to recruit a new Senior Vice President for Programs to be based in Washington, DC.

About the Case Foundation

Jean and Steve Case founded the Case Foundation in 1997 to reflect their family's heartfelt commitment to finding lasting solutions to complex social challenges. Over the past few years, the Foundation has pursued a number of interesting initiatives, primarily driven by three strategic priorities:

  • Encouraging collaboration;

  • Supporting successful leaders; and

  • Fostering entrepreneurship in the nonprofit sector.

The Foundation has applied these strategies to meet the needs of underserved children and families; create thriving and sustainable economic development for communities; bridge cultural and religious divides; expand civic engagement and volunteerism; and accelerate innovative approaches to cancer care.

The Foundation's work stretches across the United States and around the world. To date, the Foundation have supported more than 150 organizations that reflect its commitment to collaboration, leadership, and entrepreneurship -- and, ultimately, to improving the health and well-being of children, families, and communities.

Overview:

Now the Foundation is interested in further developing its strategic focus around the issue of giving. We are exploring the potential for expanding the definition of “giving” and seeking ways to deepen civic engagement. We are imagining a giving culture in which: • Opportunities to give are available anywhere and any time. They are a part of our daily lives— as donors, volunteers, consumers, employees, neighbors, and citizens—and the different ways people can give are characterized by convenience, control, and confidence.

  • Everyone’s giving power is easily connected. Networks of people sharing their issues, concerns and solutions can focus on what matters to them in citizen-centered, transparent, and scalable ways.

  • Effective public-private partnerships are the rule, not the exception. Business, government, the nonprofit sector, and individuals address issues collaboratively and are mutually invested in solutions.

  • The information people need to make smarter giving decisions is widely available and openly shared. Through information everyone is empowered to make a difference.

  • Giving is meaningful and enjoyable [even fun], and is recognized and rewarded in ways that encourage even greater engagement and involve more people.

The Senior Vice President will work as part of a senior management team including Jean Case, CEO, Ben Binswanger, Chief Operating Officer and Brian Sasscer, Senior Vice President for Interactive Strategies on development and implementation of strategies and campaigns that support the Foundations efforts to change the meaning of civic engagement. The Foundation has been committed to using the internet to build innovative approaches to reach a new generation (“Millennials”) and others engaged in addressing critical social issues. These new “Social Citizens” represents a model and era of citizen participation that combines idealism, digital fluency, and immersion in social causes.

The expansion of online social communities and networks creates a unique opportunity to impact social causes at a much larger scale and to change the way we activate, energize and connect people to issues of critical importance. In fact, new digital communities have already impacted the practice of philanthropy by making it faster, flatter, creative and democratic. The SVP will lead a team of up to eight professional staff members – including three with programmatic responsibilities and three with content and publishing responsibilities -- to implement strategies, partnerships, campaigns, and special initiatives to expand new models for citizen participation.

The Foundation has an untapped opportunity to more effectively utilize outreach strategies to increase its impact with the addition of new staff resources, beginning of several new program initiatives; changes in technology and society are revamping how the world communicates; and how philanthropy is playing an increasingly important role in shaping social change.

The SVP will be charged with the following overarching goals and objectives:

  • Continue to develop future programs related to strategic giving and civic engagement;

  • Aggregate content and current program activities and strategically align to key social media networks;

  • Advance the Case Foundation’s “Social Citizen” theme and other priority programs;

  • Align these activities over the next 18 months with the development of a longer term effort to embed new giving behaviors in American culture via online networks.

The SVP should ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Professional Qualifications

  • Direct engagement with social networking resources and online giving marketplaces;

  • Proven understanding of online campaign strategies and other strategic communication and branding activities;

  • Effective skills in time management, budgeting, and program oversight;

  • Able to generate and deliver persuasive and clear verbal and written communications;

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; must have credibility, good judgment, honesty, and integrity;

  • Initiative to solve problems with energy and a positive attitude;

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team player and with grace and flexibility in a rapidly changing environment;

  • Able to anticipate, prioritize, and manage tasks while simultaneously demonstrating genuine respect for diversity and inclusiveness with multicultural sensitivity.

Personal Attributes

  • A proven ability to perform effectively under pressure and to utilize strong organizational skills when faced with multiple time-sensitive priorities – a willingness to "roll-up sleeves" and personally handle all aspects of position;

  • An agile and creative intellect, entrepreneurial, pragmatic and flexible;

  • Superb organizational and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to diplomatically prioritize demands;

  • A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, including the humility and grace to work effectively with others in a collaborative workplace;

  • A high energy level, self-motivated, with a keen sense of humor;

  • Bachelor's degree required and an advanced degree would be a plus.

Compensation

Compensation for the Senior Vice President for Programs includes a competitive base salary, and an excellent employee benefits package.
